The Key to Staying Fit and Healthy

In the quest for good health and wellbeing, it is essential to understand how to stay fit and healthy. Each individual is unique in their own way, and it is important to explore what works best for oneself at the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels. Good health is a priority in life, as it aligns with our swadharma, our duty towards ourselves. When we are fit and healthy, we can avoid the miseries of sickness and pain.

Hayam Dukkamanagatam

Maharshi Patanjali advises "Hayam Dukkamanagatam" in the second chapter of Patanjali's Yoga Sutra, sutra number 16. It emphasizes the importance of living in the present to avoid future suffering. It provides guidance on how to make choices in life by being mindful of one's age, limitations, and behavior towards others.

Seven Tips for Staying Fit, Healthy, and Contented

  1. Observe Fruit Day: As a normal healthy person, it is beneficial to observe a fruit day once a month. On this day, consume only fruits to give rest to your digestive system and improve metabolism. Choose from the variety of fruits available, as they are easily digestible and provide energy and alertness.
  2. Stay Hydrated: Water is a vital element for the body, as it makes up approximately 60% of our body composition. Experts recommend drinking sufficient water daily. To make it more interesting, try drinking warm water with a pinch of salt and lemon twice a day. This natural detoxifier helps cleanse the system.
  3. Practice Yoga Sedas: To maintain fitness and good health, it is essential to be active and engage our muscular and skeletal systems. Incorporate daily yoga sedas into your routine, which involve stretching the spine in six different ways: upward, sidewall bending, forward and backward bending, twisting, and inwards. These asanas strengthen the muscles of the spine and improve posture.
  4. Equal Breathing: Breathing exercises have a profound impact on our emotional state. Practice equal breathing twice a day by inhaling for three counts and exhaling for three counts. Repeat this breathing rhythm for four rounds. This technique, known as equal breathing, induces calmness within seconds.
  5. Mindful Breathing: Take a 10-minute break from the constant chatter of the mind. Find a quiet place, preferably in nature, sit comfortably with your eyes closed, and make your spine straight. Relax your shoulders and passively observe your breathing without exaggerating the pattern. Gradually, you will experience rhythmic breathing and a relaxed mind.
  6. Pamper Yourself: Incorporate activities that rejuvenate your being into your daily schedule. Set aside 10 minutes each day to tend to potted plants, decorate your windows, or try new recipes. These activities will awaken your creativity and provide a sense of fulfillment.
  7. Volunteer: Dedicate yourself to selfless voluntary activities once a week. Engage in activities such as helping the elderly, cooking for the sick, or teaching underprivileged children. There are plenty of opportunities around you to make a positive impact on others. This helps develop empathy and makes you a better person.

By following these seven ways, you can discover a better and fitter version of yourself. Devoting time to these activities will enrich you in many ways. Lastly, be grateful for all the blessings you have received in life. Embrace good health and wellbeing with gratitude.
